Diversity and Cultural Citizenship.
Youtube helps people gain “citizenship” due to being part of popular culture. It’s important for women, LGBTQ+ people, and religious minorities to take part in the popular culture to get that citizenship. The citizenship that they are trying to achieve is acceptance in a community. They use Youtube to show what they care about, who they are, and most importantly how they fit into their society. They use Youtube to find people who can relate to anything that they’ve gone through. Many people break their boundaries using Youtube. They share personal content, some of which can cause debates. People who have cultural citizenship are able to start talking about uncomfortable or difficult topics. They can start conversations that need to be had. For example, many LGBTQ+ participants on Youtube make coming out stories. This helps many others through their own coming-out story. The use of storytelling on youtube, helps people relate and starts conversations. Globalisation and Localisation. Youtube is a global application. It can be found anywhere on the internet and many consumers and creators from different countries can access it. In 2008 Youtube was in almost every continent and in 2017 there were 70 different country versions of it. Before April of 2008, users could not choose the type of Youtube that they wanted to use. Searches and recommendations were given based on the person’s geographic location. Youtube was then made more localized in April of 2008. People could choose what country version they wanted. While doing this they could also change the language of the content. There was a content filter that was added as Youtube became more mobile. Users and creators are able to make their youtube their way, making youtube localized. YouTube as Cultural Archive. Youtube is rarely used for new content. Many people go to Youtube to look at nostalgic commercials and videos, and to listen to nostalgic music. Youtube is the place where people keep old commercials, documentaries, songs, and more. The main use of youtube is to listen to music, but most of the music that users are listening to, they already know. Youtube is a place where you can add things and people can look back at them for years. Users have been able to create a large and diverse archive n youtube. Each person has their individual likes and dislikes and it contributes to Youtube. Users are constantly looking back on old videos. It holds previous pop cultures and is helping the current pop culture grow and become more diverse. In time newer videos will become a part of the archive.

My teacher had a watch a clip of Killing us softly in class during. I could not find the original video but here is my discussion.
Question: Describe an experience you have seen in media, where someone was de-humanized based on their gender, their sexual orientation, their race, or their religion, etc. This can apply to men as well. My Response: I've seen multiple posts on Instagram about the Black Lives Matter movement. In the comments, many people de-humanize the people mentioned in the Instagram post. Not only because of their race but also because of their sexual orientation and gender. This assignment is one that we did in class. It's from September of 2020, but I think that I should add it here. We were asked to answer these questions:
- "What do you like about them?" -"Do you have a preferred genre?" - "To what extent is your favorite 'conventional'?" Response: Favorite Films: Harry Potter series, The Hunger Games series, Magic Camp, Little Women, and Spiderman into the Spiderverse 1. I think the artistic values that each of them has and I love the story being told. 2. My preferred genre is fantasy 3. I think that Spiderman into the Spiderverse is pretty conventional. The art style is what makes it different.
In class we we're asked to read the article "How the news changes the way we think and behave - BBC Future" and give our thoughts on it.
Response: The article "How The News Changes The Way We Think and Behave" explains what the media does to get people to act a certain way. Iison Holman was working on a mental health study when the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013 happened. Afterward, they took data on how the bombing affected people's mental health, and he saw that people who watched it on the news were more affected than those who were actually there. This is because new shows and articles use vivid pictures and overexaggerate certain things while underestimating other things. Many news articles and TV stations focus on the negatives in this world and overexaggerate things. This is bad because it gets people to start seeing only the negatives in life and ruins their mental health. I agree with this article. We are currently in a pandemic. Many things are exaggerated or underestimated in the news, and it causes a lot of stress and anxiety. This especially causes stress and anxiety when we look towards the future because we don't know what's happening next. The news is our resource of outside information right now, and we are constantly looking at it to find something positive, however, not much positivity is spread. When people remember 2020, they will only remember all of the bad things and use the news as a reference. I am sure that there were a bunch of good things that were not spread because news stations did not believe that it would bring them enough attention. In class we were asked to watch the video How Social Media Shapes Identity on YouTube and give our thoughts on it. This is my response.
Response: Humans have used tools and technology throughout the years to be who we are today. We use many different types of media that help express what we look like and who we are, like how apple can change the skin color of some emojis. People not only use media to show who they are, but they also use it t show who they want to be, like role-playing games. People use role-playing games to express themselves, but they create a world that they wish they had. One way social media has influenced me is by what I take pictures of. I rarely post pictures of me by myself or ones that I don’t feel pretty in. Another way that social media has influenced me is by inspiring what I wear. Before social media, I didn’t wear that many black clothes, leggings, and dresses. I got inspired by the people that I saw on social media to change the way that I dressed. I agree that media shapes a person’s identity, especially when it is apart of everyday life. Many teenagers use social media almost every day. There are a bunch of different aesthetics that people are trying to achieve and there are a bunch of labels that people use to identify who they are. They try to find an aesthetic to showcase all over social media apps, like Instagram or Snapchat, who they are, and the aesthetic is used to identify them sometimes. |
