Diversity and Cultural Citizenship.
Youtube helps people gain “citizenship” due to being part of popular culture. It’s important for women, LGBTQ+ people, and religious minorities to take part in the popular culture to get that citizenship. The citizenship that they are trying to achieve is acceptance in a community. They use Youtube to show what they care about, who they are, and most importantly how they fit into their society. They use Youtube to find people who can relate to anything that they’ve gone through. Many people break their boundaries using Youtube. They share personal content, some of which can cause debates. People who have cultural citizenship are able to start talking about uncomfortable or difficult topics. They can start conversations that need to be had. For example, many LGBTQ+ participants on Youtube make coming out stories. This helps many others through their own coming-out story. The use of storytelling on youtube, helps people relate and starts conversations. Globalisation and Localisation. Youtube is a global application. It can be found anywhere on the internet and many consumers and creators from different countries can access it. In 2008 Youtube was in almost every continent and in 2017 there were 70 different country versions of it. Before April of 2008, users could not choose the type of Youtube that they wanted to use. Searches and recommendations were given based on the person’s geographic location. Youtube was then made more localized in April of 2008. People could choose what country version they wanted. While doing this they could also change the language of the content. There was a content filter that was added as Youtube became more mobile. Users and creators are able to make their youtube their way, making youtube localized. YouTube as Cultural Archive. Youtube is rarely used for new content. Many people go to Youtube to look at nostalgic commercials and videos, and to listen to nostalgic music. Youtube is the place where people keep old commercials, documentaries, songs, and more. The main use of youtube is to listen to music, but most of the music that users are listening to, they already know. Youtube is a place where you can add things and people can look back at them for years. Users have been able to create a large and diverse archive n youtube. Each person has their individual likes and dislikes and it contributes to Youtube. Users are constantly looking back on old videos. It holds previous pop cultures and is helping the current pop culture grow and become more diverse. In time newer videos will become a part of the archive.
