There are many issues with media ownership and funding in contemporary media practice.
An issue of media ownership is that parent companies have a lot of children companies that they have to keep in control. If a child company does something or promotes something, it does not only negatively impact their image, but it also negatively impacts their parent company's image. How the parent company deals with the issues can sometimes lead to another problem, bias. This issue starts to affect the audience. Some companies try to withhold information that damages them and only let the audience see the information that benefits them. Bias causes issues because it misleads the audience. It would also ruin the parent's company if this would ever get out. Another issue is money. Many parent companies spend less to distribute their products because they have many different sub-companies. For people trying to advertise an item or film, they would have to use cross-advertising. Instead of paying for one platform to place their advertisements, they would pay to be on multiple. The parent company benefits by making more money. The parent company alters information to their benefit, and they end up making more money, which makes them more powerful. One more issue of company ownership is the lack of diversity. Parent companies control smaller companies, so the ideas and production of products and film come from the parent company. There are very few parent companies, which means there are very few ideas that are being created and spread throughout the media. Stereotypes and clichés in movies and shows are an example of this. While there may be many issues with Media ownership and funding in contemporary media practice, there are also some benefits to it, like better quality items. The media is super powerful and affects everyone's daily life, and without it, life would be different.
