In class we were asked to watch the video How Social Media Shapes Identity on YouTube and give our thoughts on it. This is my response.
Response: Humans have used tools and technology throughout the years to be who we are today. We use many different types of media that help express what we look like and who we are, like how apple can change the skin color of some emojis. People not only use media to show who they are, but they also use it t show who they want to be, like role-playing games. People use role-playing games to express themselves, but they create a world that they wish they had. One way social media has influenced me is by what I take pictures of. I rarely post pictures of me by myself or ones that I don’t feel pretty in. Another way that social media has influenced me is by inspiring what I wear. Before social media, I didn’t wear that many black clothes, leggings, and dresses. I got inspired by the people that I saw on social media to change the way that I dressed. I agree that media shapes a person’s identity, especially when it is apart of everyday life. Many teenagers use social media almost every day. There are a bunch of different aesthetics that people are trying to achieve and there are a bunch of labels that people use to identify who they are. They try to find an aesthetic to showcase all over social media apps, like Instagram or Snapchat, who they are, and the aesthetic is used to identify them sometimes.
