In class we we're asked to read the article "How the news changes the way we think and behave - BBC Future" and give our thoughts on it.
Response: The article "How The News Changes The Way We Think and Behave" explains what the media does to get people to act a certain way. Iison Holman was working on a mental health study when the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013 happened. Afterward, they took data on how the bombing affected people's mental health, and he saw that people who watched it on the news were more affected than those who were actually there. This is because new shows and articles use vivid pictures and overexaggerate certain things while underestimating other things. Many news articles and TV stations focus on the negatives in this world and overexaggerate things. This is bad because it gets people to start seeing only the negatives in life and ruins their mental health. I agree with this article. We are currently in a pandemic. Many things are exaggerated or underestimated in the news, and it causes a lot of stress and anxiety. This especially causes stress and anxiety when we look towards the future because we don't know what's happening next. The news is our resource of outside information right now, and we are constantly looking at it to find something positive, however, not much positivity is spread. When people remember 2020, they will only remember all of the bad things and use the news as a reference. I am sure that there were a bunch of good things that were not spread because news stations did not believe that it would bring them enough attention.
